Based on an initial artists impression, these towering masts resembled the sails of passing yachts in the Torquay Marina where they are situated. Thin gauge stainless steel was rolled to a number of individual profiles which were then welded together to form the masts. The natural frequency of the light-weight aerofoil shapes is such that the masts vibrate in the passing wind, bringing life to these installations.
While the adjacent bridge was designed by others, the controls for raising and lowering of the deck were housed within one of the mast elements for a clean aesthetic.
