Numerous elegant fabric structures have been designed and engineered by the practice. The efficiency and function of this type of lightweight structure is acutely affected by the geometry and curvature of the membrane. The forces induced can be very large if not carefully controlled. So called ‘Iceberg foundation’ structures, where nine tenths of the structural action happens below ground, can be created in order to resolve the immense fabric forces. A sensible holistic approach to design will minimise both project costs and environmental impact.
